Abstract: The article deals with the concept of French culture in the creative heritage of Piotr M. Bitsilli. It is proved that the provisions of Bitsilli’s works of the 1930s have not only historical, but also theoretical and methodological significance for understanding French culture. Thanks to his excellent knowledge of the specific history of France, Bitsilli was able to identify typological features of French culture. A Russian scholar offered an original explanation for France’s leadership in the history of European culture. Bitsilli came to the conclusion that the main condition for the integrity of French culture was immutability during the “eight centuries of one dynasty’s reign”, which testified to his brilliant synthetic analysis of the past. Stating in the mid-1930s an important “milestone” in the cultural history of France, Bitsilli warned of the danger of cultural separatism, cultural revolutions and radical changes of cultural orientations. Bitsilli’s theory of culture, based on a synthetic understanding of the cultural experience of France, as it often happened, remained unclaimed by cultural practitioners and politicians.
