  • Abstract: The article presents for the first time the inscriptions by E.G. Etkind and I.Z. Serman from the library of M.G. Altshuller and E.N. Dryzhakova. These dedications possess not only memorial but also historical significance, reflecting the complex relationship between intellectuals and authorities during the Soviet era. During a customs inspection in Moscow, the inscriptions were confiscated by Soviet special services, after which the authors created new dedications while in emigration, endowing these documents with special symbolic meaning as acts of resistance against censorship. The publication also includes M. Altshuller’s 1979 review of E. Etkind’s book “The Matter of Verse”, which remained unpublished at the time. Roman Gul, editor-in-chief of “The New Review”, had commissioned Altshuller to write this review. However, having become disillusioned with the scholar’s socio-political stance, the editor later declared the review unnecessary. This text, which has retained its scholarly value, is published not only as a belated response to Etkind’s monograph but also as a testament to academic and personal loyalty to his memory: the manuscript was carefully preserved in Mark Altshuller’s archive for over forty years in the very book that Etkind later inscribed. Particularly noteworthy is the analysis of Etkind’s methodological approach, which Altshuller characterizes as “structuralism with a human face”, emphasizing its combination of rigorous scholarly analysis with profound understanding of the humanistic nature of poetic texts.
