  • Abstract: The archival heritage of A.V. Amfiteatrov, including both the pre-revolutionary and emigration periods, represents an extremely rich and significant documentation on the history of the 20th-century Russian culture. It is also a case study of the fragmentation of emigration archives, following the historical events of the 20th century. The research aims to establish not only the stages of formation of the archive, but also the history of its fragmentation and displacement of its parts. The research is based on archival documents of the Russian Foreign Historical Archive (RZHV) from the Slavic Library of the National Library in Prague. These materials are important both for the history of Amfiteatrov’s archive and because they represent a vivid example of the RZHV activities, more precisely its procedure in purchasing materials and processing them. Basing on the correspondence between various representatives of the RZHV, Amfiteatrov himself and his son Vladimir Amfiteatrov (Kadashev), who acted as an intermediary, two stages of negotiations can be distinguished: the first discusses the conditions for the transfer of the correspondence of M. Gorky, G.A. Lopatin and others. These materials will subsequently be transferred from RZHV to the USSR and distributed among various archives. The second phase of negotiations, after Amfiteatrov’s death, regarding the possible transfer of a significant part of the archive, was not implemented, due to the pre-war political situation, which led to the closure of the RZHV itself.
